60 Years of Grant-making

In 1958 the Garfield Weston Foundation donated £50,000 to four charities. Today the Foundation grants well over £60million each year to over 1,800 charities and, in our 60th year, we will exceed the billionth pound mark.

Through its grant-making, most people in the UK have been touched by the Foundation at some point during their lives. Our Trustees support charities that demonstrate they are meeting a need effectively with clear outcomes and benefits, excellent leadership, sensible business plans and, crucially, a passion for their work. Our Trustees’ strategy is clear, simple and consistent – to be flexible, to meet need in the most effective way and to back talented people and teams. Our Trustees do not restrict their funding by category or geography – they support causes as the need arises and wherever they believe it will make a difference. They are also prepared to fund vital core costs or activity that may be less appealing to other donors.

The Foundation also supports organisations of all sizes from small community groups to large national institutions. Since the Foundation began, three generations of the Weston family have made over 40,000 individual grants.

From the thousands of charities we have supported, we have selected a handful to give you a flavour of the Foundation’s grant-making and to highlight some of these charities’ important work. We hope you enjoy our special Anniversary Book.
